And while some people may try to convince you that you can simply water down an essential oil to get a hydrosol, they’re not quite understanding how hydrosols and essential oils are made.

What is the Difference Between Hydrosols and Essential Oils?

You see, both hydrosols and essential oils are made through the same technique, but the end result is very different.

Both products use steam distillation to get the most essential chemicals from all kinds of different plants. Steam distillation, for the uninitiated, is an ancient technique that unlocks the chemicals inside plants using the power of steam. Plants are placed in a distillery and steam is injected into the tank. The heat and moisture draws out the essential oils and carries through a tube. From there, the water is cooled and condensed down, carrying within it the powers of the plants. With essential oils, the oil and water are split and skimmed off and usually run through multiple times to increase the potency. This can result in a highly powerful product that can also be damaged by multiple exposures to high heat. But with hydrosols, the process usually only happens once since it doesn’t need to be separated from the water.

How Can You Use Hydrosols?

As you can see, hydrosols may be less potent, but they’re also less refined and manufactured, giving you a purer essence of the oil that isn’t overly tampered with the create something far more powerful.
