Hydrosols are, in essence, a less potent essential oil, one that uses the same process and technique as making essential oils, but puts it into a solution with pure water that’s less concentrated, and thus less dangerous for the average consumer. And while some people may try to convince you that you can simply water down an essential oil to get a hydrosol, they’re not quite understanding how hydrosols and essential oils are made.
You see, both hydrosols and essential oils are made through the same technique, but the end result is very different.
Both products use steam distillation to get the most essential chemicals from all kinds of different plants. Steam distillation, for the uninitiated, is an ancient technique that unlocks the chemicals inside plants using the power of steam. Plants are placed in a distillery and steam is injected into the tank. The heat and moisture draws out the essential oils and carries through a tube. From there, the water is cooled and condensed down, carrying within it the powers of the plants. With essential oils, the oil and water are split and skimmed off and usually run through multiple times to increase the potency. This can result in a highly powerful product that can also be damaged by multiple exposures to high heat. But with hydrosols, the process usually only happens once since it doesn’t need to be separated from the water.
As you can see, hydrosols may be less potent, but they’re also less refined and manufactured, giving you a purer essence of the oil that isn’t overly tampered with the create something far more powerful.
Now that you know a little bit about how hydrosols are made, and how they differ from essential oils, you can start to look at how they can help you specifically with all kinds of issues. Many can be used as sprays that can touch your skin directly, unlike essential oils, which can actually be harmful to your skin. You can also burn them to give your home a welcoming smell or refreshing air. There are many uses for hydrosols; you can use certain hydrosols to keep you awake, treat your skin after shaving, and even to get makeup to set quicker. The options are almost as endless as the plants that can be turned into hydrosols.
Hydrosols are quickly gaining steam in the world by amateurs and professionals alike. While they are similar to watered down essential oils, they are incredibly different. And now that you know some of their uses and how they’re made, you can start your journey of discovery, and learn firsthand how hydrosols can improve your life.
